Haven vs Lawson Blue Ridge: Which Flat-Lay Hammock Tent?

Camper lying flat on the insulated pad inside a blue Haven XL

Haven or Lawson Blue Ridge: which flat-lay hammock tent should you get? They're close relatives. Both use spreader bars to make a flat sleeping surface, both have a built-in bug net and include a rainfly, and both can be used hung or on the ground. The main differences are insulation and sizing. A Haven kit includes an insulated air pad sized to its platform and built into how it stays flat, while the Blue Ridge comes without insulation (Lawson sells an underquilt separately). Lawson makes one Blue Ridge size with a 275 lb limit; Haven makes four models rated to 285 lb, or 350 lb for the Safari. The Blue Ridge costs less up front, so compare like for like once you add insulation.

Haven Tents makes the Haven, so read this knowing that. Lawson specs below come from Lawson's own product pages, checked on 21 October 2026 (see Sources at the end).

Lawson prices are in USD as shown on lawsonhammock.com on 21 October 2026. Size figures are measured differently by each brand (Haven gives the sleeping platform, Lawson the interior), so treat them as a guide rather than a direct match.

Insulation is the biggest difference

When you sleep off the ground, air moves under you and takes heat with it, so what's underneath you matters more than in a tent. A Haven is designed around its insulated air pad: the pad's baffles help hold the platform open and flat, and it insulates you from below, so you don't need an underquilt. If you sleep cold or camp in shoulder season, add the Insulated Pad Cover (see How to Hammock Camp in the Cold). You can order a Haven without a pad, but you'll need one that matches the platform size to get the flat lay.

The Blue Ridge price doesn't include insulation. In warm weather you may not need any. For cooler nights, Lawson sells its own underquilt ($114 when we checked, listed for 17-64°F and meant to be used with a sleeping bag and the right clothing), or you can use your own pad.

Size and weight limit

Lawson makes one Blue Ridge with a 275 lb limit. Haven makes four models: the Haven Tent with a 24-inch platform for smaller campers (best for people under about 180 lb), and the 30-inch Haven XL, ultralight Haven Spectre and canvas Haven Safari. The Tent, XL and Spectre are rated to 285 lb and the Safari to 350 lb. Which Haven? helps you pick.

Weather protection

Both include a rainfly. Lawson lists its fly as rip-stop nylon, polyethylene coated to 1000 mm, with a sealed nylon border on the canopy against water blowing up under the fly. Haven lists 4,000 mm for the Haven Tent, XL and Safari rainflies, and the Spectre's fly is cut to cover its whole mesh body. Haven rainflies can be guyed out for airflow or locked down in storm mode; the setup guide shows how.

Choose Haven if…

  • You want the insulated pad included and fitted, with no underquilt to buy or rig.
  • You sleep on your side or stomach and want a pad that's part of the structure (see Hammocking for Side Sleepers).
  • You need a higher weight rating (285 lb, or 350 lb in the Safari) or want to choose a size.
  • You want an ultralight version (Spectre) or a heavy-duty canvas one (Safari).

Choose the Lawson Blue Ridge if…

  • You want the lower up-front price for a flat-lay hammock tent with a bug net and rainfly.
  • You mostly camp in warm weather, or you already own an underquilt or pad you like.
  • You fit within its 275 lb limit and like its arch-pole canopy and ground-staking design.

Common questions

Are both really flat? Both are designed for a flat lay rather than the curved "banana" of a gathered-end hammock. Lawson uses a spreader bar system and arch poles; Haven uses spreader bars, support arcs, a ridgeline and a fitted pad (how the Haven design works).

Which is lighter? Compare complete setups. Lawson's 4 lb 4 oz includes the hammock, poles, rainfly and stuff sack but no insulation or straps. Haven product pages list kit weights with and without the pad and rainfly, so you can compare the same configuration.

Can I use either one without trees? Yes. Lawson says the Blue Ridge can be staked on the ground. A Haven can go on the ground in bivy mode or hang from the Haven Stand.
