No More Cold Butt Syndrome: How to Hammock Camp in the Cold

How do you hammock camp in the cold? You need insulation underneath you as well as on top. Cold air moving under a hammock steals heat fast, so a sleeping bag alone isn't enough. In a traditional hammock that bottom insulation is an underquilt. In a Haven, the insulated pad is your bottom insulation (R2.5 Spectre pad, R5 Premium pad, R5.3 True Level Safari pad), and the Insulated Pad Cover adds more under your core for colder nights. Pair that with a sleeping bag or top quilt rated for the conditions, and lock the rainfly down against the wind.

Why traditional hammocks get cold

Gathered-end camping hammocks are fantastic on a breezy summer night, when the biggest concern is an errant mosquito. But as the temperature drops, the air circulating beneath you pulls heat through the fabric and compresses whatever insulation you're lying on. The usual fix is an underquilt: the hammock camper's bulky, sometimes fiddly, best friend. It works, but getting the right balance of warmth and comfort takes adjusting, and it adds weight and steps to your setup.

Wind, rain and snow matter too. A good top quilt and a well-pitched rainfly become essential, and each one adds to the puzzle.

How a Haven keeps you warm

With the insulated pad, Haven is a 3-season system. For colder nights, the Insulated Pad Cover adds insulation under your core and makes it a 4-season setup. That doesn't mean a set temperature rating: how warm you sleep also depends on your sleeping bag or quilt, the wind, and how well the rainfly is secured.

Cold-weather checklist

Bottom insulation first. Use the highest R-value pad you have, and add the Insulated Pad Cover when nights get cold.
Top insulation for the forecast. Bring a sleeping bag or top quilt rated below the lowest temperature you expect.
Block the wind. Pitch the rainfly low and batten it down to the corner toggles on the windward side, or both sides (how to lock the fly down). Pick a sheltered spot if you can.
Top off the pad at bedtime. Cold air takes up less space, so a pad inflated in the afternoon feels softer at night. That's normal, not a leak (more on this). Add a breath or two before you sleep.
Manage condensation. Leave a vent open where you can; damp insulation is cold insulation (condensation tips).

Wrapping up

As you plan your next trip, think about how you want to spend your nights. You can do the underquilt shuffle in a traditional hammock, or use a Haven, where the bottom insulation is part of the bed. Either way, keep your friends close and your insulation closer!
