Hammock Tent vs Tent in Rain and Wind: Which Holds Up Better?
Haven Tents · October 22, 2026 · 4 min read
Hammock tent or tent in rain and bad weather: which holds up better? Pitched well, both keep you dry. In rain, a hammock tent has one clear advantage: you're hanging above the ground, so pooling water and a soaked campsite can't reach your bed, and you can put the rainfly up first and set up the rest underneath it. A ground tent is the better choice for long storms you want to sit out inside, for exposed, treeless sites in strong wind, and for sharing one shelter. Wind is where a hammock needs more care: air moving under you takes heat away unless there's insulation beneath you, which a Haven builds in.

Rain, wind and storms compared
| Ground tent | Hammock tent (Haven) |
| Rain from above | Fly and tent body | Rainfly over the whole hammock; Haven Tent, XL and Safari flies rated 4,000 mm |
| Water on the ground | Can soak through a worn floor or pool under it on a poor site | Doesn't reach you when hung |
| Setting up in the rain | The inner tent can get wet while you pitch | Fly goes up first; set up the rest under it |
| Strong wind | A low tent on open ground handles it well if staked and guyed | Trees break the wind, but check for dead branches; lock the fly down and guy it out |
| Cold wind | Floor and pad block it below | Insulated pad blocks the air below; a pad cover adds more |
| Condensation | Common in a closed tent | Easier to vent with the fly guyed out |
| Sitting out a long storm | Room to sit up, cook in the vestibule, play cards | Fine for lying down; less room to sit up and move around |
| Treeless, exposed sites | Works anywhere you can stake it | Needs a stand, or pitch on the ground in bivy mode |
Where a hammock tent does better in the rain
- Your bed stays out of the water. In a downpour, campsites flood and tent floors sit in puddles. A hung bed doesn't.
- Fly first. On a Haven the rainfly connects at the two end loops, so you can hang and tension it before anything else and keep your gear dry while you finish.
- More airflow. With the fly guyed out, air moves through and less condensation forms. Most "leaks" are actually condensation (managing condensation).
- A dry spot under the fly. Packs and boots can sit under the hammock, out of the rain.
Where a ground tent does better
- Long storms. If you expect to spend a day inside, a tent you can sit up and move around in is easier to live in.
- Open, exposed terrain. Above treeline or on a beach with no anchors, a low tent staked to the ground is simpler. A Haven can go on the ground in bivy mode with trekking poles or sticks, but it's a backup, not its best use.
- Several people. One tent can shelter a group; each Haven sleeps one.
- Lightning and falling branches. Hanging from trees means checking the canopy for dead limbs before you set up. In a thunderstorm, follow local safety advice for where to shelter; neither shelter protects you from lightning.
Setting up a Haven for rain and wind
- Pick sheltered, healthy trees. Look up for dead branches, and avoid low spots where water collects.
- Hang the fly first if rain is coming.
- Lock it down for storms. Pull the rainfly low and stake all four guy lines (guyline setup). In fair weather, guy it out wide for airflow, or roll it back for the view.
- Stop water running down the straps. Water can follow the tree straps toward the hammock; a short cord tied around each strap just outside the fly lets drips fall off before they reach you.
- Keep the pad in. In cold, windy weather the insulated pad is what stops the wind under you from chilling you. Add the Insulated Pad Cover on cold nights.
- Know your model. The Haven Spectre's mesh body isn't waterproof, so its rainfly covers everything; pitch it fully whenever rain is possible. The Haven Safari's fly is heavy 300d polyester canvas.
Which should you choose?
If your trips are mostly in wooded country and your worry is waking up in a puddle, a hammock tent like the Haven Tent or Haven XL handles rain well. If you camp above treeline, on open coast, in groups, or expect to sit out multi-day storms, a ground tent is the more practical shelter.
