Do You Need a Sleeping Pad If You Sleep Off the Ground?

Do you need a sleeping pad if you sleep off the ground? On most nights, yes, or some other insulation underneath you. Getting off the ground removes rocks and damp, but it doesn't keep you warm: air moving under a cot or a hammock carries heat away, and the part of your sleeping bag you lie on is squashed flat and barely insulates. On a cot you add a pad on top. In a traditional hammock you add an underquilt or a pad. A lay-flat hammock tent like the Haven already has an insulated pad built in, and it's also what holds the bed flat. The one time you might skip it is a warm night in a cot or a bare hammock, when the cooling air underneath is welcome.

Why sleeping off the ground can still be cold

Your bag flattens under you. Down and synthetic fill insulate because they trap air. Your body weight crushes the fill beneath you, so your back and hips get little warmth from it.
Air under you keeps moving. On the ground, cold soaks in through the pad. Off the ground, a breeze passes under the cot fabric or hammock and takes heat with it. Hammock campers call the result "cold butt syndrome".
Wind makes it worse. The same breeze that cools you on a hot night chills you on a cool one.

What each off-the-ground bed needs underneath

Underquilt or sleeping pad?

For a traditional hammock, this is the big insulation choice:

An underquilt hangs under the outside of the hammock, so your weight doesn't compress it. It's warm and you don't feel it, but it's an extra piece to buy, carry and adjust, and it only works in a hammock.
A sleeping pad goes inside the hammock. It's often cheaper, and the same pad works on the ground. In a gathered-end hammock it can slide out from under you during the night.

Many hammock campers use an underquilt in cold weather and a pad, or nothing, in summer.

How a Haven handles it

A Haven doesn't need an underquilt. Its insulated air mattress fits snugly in the hammock and does two jobs: it gives the bed its flat structure and it insulates you from the air below. Because of that, you can't leave the pad out of a Haven and still get a flat lay. A properly sized pad is essential to the design. When you can skip the pad

Warm, still nights in a cot or a bare hammock. The air underneath cools you, which is what you want in the heat.
Daytime lounging. Nobody needs insulation for an afternoon nap.

In a Haven, keep the pad in every night: on hot nights, sleep on top of your bag or under a sheet instead (sleeping cool in a hammock tent).

Which off-the-ground setup should you choose?

Car camping, level ground, no trees: a cot with a pad on top.
Back sleeper who likes hammocks and wants the lightest kit: a gathered-end or bridge hammock with an underquilt.
Side or stomach sleeper who wants one kit with the insulation built in: a lay-flat hammock tent such as the Haven Tent, Haven XL or Haven Spectre.

A Haven isn't the right choice if you want the lightest possible hammock setup for summer, where a bare hammock with a light underquilt or none weighs less, or if you need a bed for two.
