Flat Hammock Tent vs Tree Tent for Two People

Flat hammock tent or tree tent for two people? A tree tent (the Tentsile-style design that hangs a shared floor between three anchor points) lets two or more people sleep together off the ground in one shelter. Two lay-flat hammock tents give each person their own flat, insulated bed, hung from two anchors each. If sleeping side by side in one space matters most, a tree tent is the closer fit. If you want each person to sleep well without feeling the other move, and you'd like a lighter, simpler hang, two lay-flat hammock tents are usually the better choice. A Haven sleeps one person, so a couple needs two.

Comparing specific brands? Our Haven vs Tentsile article lists Tentsile models side by side with each Haven, with sources.

How each one works

Tree tents stretch a tensioned floor between three trees (some models use more), with a tent body and rainfly over the top. The floor is shared, so two or three people lie on the same surface. You'll usually want sleeping pads on the floor for comfort and warmth, because air moves under it.

Lay-flat hammock tents like the Haven hang from two points. Each one holds an insulated air mattress flat in a suspended frame, with a bug net and rainfly built in. Two people hang two Havens side by side, in a line, or from a shared anchor tree (see Group Hammock Camping).

When a tree tent is the better choice

  • You want to sleep next to your partner or kids in one space.
  • You like a shared hangout platform in camp.
  • Your sites have three good trees close together and you don't mind tensioning three straps.

When two lay-flat hammock tents are the better choice

  • Different sleepers. One of you tosses and turns, sleeps on your side or stomach, or goes to bed later. Separate beds mean you don't wake each other.
  • Finding anchors. Two trees the right distance apart (about 12 to 15 ft works well) are easier to find than three in the right triangle, and Havens can share an anchor tree.
  • Splitting the load. On a hike, each person carries their own shelter.
  • Flat comfort. Each platform stays flat regardless of what the other person does. More in Can You Sleep Flat in a Hammock?

Two hammock tents or one two-person ground tent?

Many couples are really choosing between two Havens and a shared ground tent, not a tree tent.

Is one shared shelter more comfortable than two separate beds? There's no single answer. If you sleep better close together, a shared tent wins. If one of you is a light sleeper, a side or stomach sleeper, or sore on the ground, two separate flat beds usually make for better nights. Hanging two Havens close together, or from a shared anchor tree, keeps you near each other (how to arrange them).

Limits to know

Two Havens means two kits to buy. You can't cuddle in them: each is rated for one adult (285 lb for the Haven Tent, XL and Spectre; 350 lb for the Safari), and we don't make a two-person Haven (why). Use only healthy trees, check overhead for dead branches, and keep the hang low (hang safe). If neither option suits you, a two-person ground tent or a rooftop tent keeps you together, on or off the ground.

Which Havens for a couple?

Pick by each person's size and trip: the Haven Tent for average builds, the Haven XL for larger or taller campers, the Haven Spectre for backpacking and the Haven Safari for car camping. Mixing models is fine. For how a Haven compares with other shelters, see Haven vs Ground Tents and the outdoor sleep systems page.
