Haven vs Kammok and ENO: Lay-Flat Hammock Tent vs Gathered-End Hammock

Haven vs Kammok and ENO: what's the difference? Kammok and ENO are best known for gathered-end hammocks: a length of fabric gathered at each end, which is light, packs small, costs less and holds a lot of weight. The fabric curves, so most people lie at an angle across it to get flatter, and many side and stomach sleepers find that hard. A Haven is a lay-flat hammock tent: spreader bars, side support arcs, a ridgeline and a fitted insulated pad make a flat bed, and the bug net and rainfly are included. If you mostly lounge, or sleep well on your back in a hammock, a gathered-end hammock is the lighter and less expensive choice. If you want to sleep flat on your side or stomach with everything in one kit, that's what Haven is built for.

Haven Tents makes the Haven, so read this knowing that. Kammok and ENO specs below come from their own product pages, checked on 21 October 2026 (see Sources at the end).

Gathered-end vs lay-flat: how they sleep

A gathered-end hammock hangs in a curve. Lying straight down the middle bends you into a "banana", so the usual technique is to lie at an angle across it, which flattens the lay. Plenty of back sleepers sleep well that way, and it's why gathered-end hammocks are so popular.

Side and stomach sleepers often have a harder time: the fabric wraps around your shoulders and the curve puts your spine at an angle. A lay-flat hammock tent is built to avoid that. In a Haven, spreader bars hold the ends open, support arcs hold up the sides, the structural ridgeline keeps the platform in shape as tree spacing changes, and the insulated pad gives you a flat, firm surface. The Secret Design Behind the Haven Tent goes through each part, and A Hammock for Stomach Sleepers compares gathered-end, asymmetric, bridge and lay-flat designs. Can You Sleep Flat in a Hammock? covers the diagonal lay in more detail.

What you need to add for an overnight

A bare gathered-end hammock is a place to lie. To camp in one overnight you'll usually add straps, a bug net, a tarp and insulation underneath (an underquilt or a pad), because hanging fabric gives no warmth from below. ENO's OneLink and Kammok's Mantis bundle the net and rain cover with the hammock; insulation is still separate. A Haven kit includes the hammock, bug net, rainfly, straps, guylines, stakes and, unless you choose the no-pad option, the insulated pad.

Where Kammok and ENO do better

  • Weight and pack size. A Roo Single (11.4 oz) or DoubleNest (19 oz) weighs far less than any Haven kit, and even the all-in-one Mantis lists 1233 g trail weight with its rainfly. Haven kits are heavier because the pad, bars and fly come with it; see each product page for kit weights.
  • Price. A gathered-end hammock costs a fraction of a Haven, and you can add pieces as you need them.
  • Weight capacity. ENO lists 400 lb and Kammok 500 lb, against 285 lb (350 lb for the Safari) for a Haven.
  • Lounging. Kammok lists its hammocks for lounging with one or two people, and ENO sells the DoubleNest as a two-person hammock. A Haven is for one person.

Choose Haven if…

  • You sleep on your side or stomach, or you've tried a gathered-end hammock and couldn't sleep in it (see Hammocking for Side Sleepers).
  • You want a flat bed off the ground with the pad, net and rainfly included, and no underquilt to rig.
  • You want the option to pitch on the ground in bivy mode when there are no trees.

Choose Kammok or ENO if…

  • You want the lightest, smallest and least expensive way to hang.
  • You mainly lounge, nap or sleep on your back, and the diagonal lay works for you.
  • You already own a tarp, bug net and underquilt, or want to build your own system piece by piece.
  • You need a higher weight capacity than a Haven offers.
