Can You Use a Hammock Tent at Campgrounds with Tent Pads or No Trees?

Can you use a hammock tent at a campground with tent pads or no trees? Usually, yes, but check the campground's rules first. Where hanging from trees is allowed and there are suitable trees on your site, hang it as normal. Where it isn't allowed, or the site is just a gravel or wooden tent pad, you have three options with a Haven: set it up on a freestanding hammock stand such as the Haven Stand, pitch it on the pad in bivy mode like a small ground tent, or hang it from a hitch mount on your vehicle. Rules vary by campground and by park, so ask the host or check the park's website before you go.

First: check the campground rules

Developed campgrounds and parks have their own policies on hammocks. Common versions are:

hammocks allowed with wide, tree-friendly straps;
no attaching anything to trees (hammocks, tarps or lines);
hammocks allowed in some areas but not others, such as front-country sites but not the backcountry, or the reverse;
all shelters must sit on the designated tent pad.

On the Haven Stand

In bivy mode

Lay the Haven on the pad, prop up each end with a trekking pole or a sturdy stick, and guy the poles and rainfly out. On a gravel pad, stakes usually hold; on hard-packed or rocky pads, tie off to rocks. The Haven Spectre's mesh body isn't waterproof, so we recommend a footprint under it. When a ground tent is simpler

If you camp mostly at campgrounds that require shelters on the pad, don't allow tree attachments, and you don't want to carry a stand, a ground tent is the easier choice, especially for a family sharing one shelter. Etiquette at busy campgrounds

Use the included wide straps, never rope or wire, around trees.
Don't hang across paths, roads or neighboring sites.
Keep the hang low, and never hang from dead trees or near the fire ring (hang safe).
Take everything down when you leave, and leave no marks on the trees.
