Best Car Camping Sleep Setup: Tent, Cot, Rooftop Tent or Hammock Tent?

What's the best sleep setup for car camping? Since you don't have to carry it far, you can choose for comfort. A large tent with a thick camp mattress or a cot is the most familiar and works for families. A rooftop tent gives you a flat mattress off the ground and sets up fast, but it's expensive and you have to pack up to drive. Sleeping in the vehicle is cheapest if it's long enough. A lay-flat hammock tent gives each person their own flat, insulated bed off the ground and hangs from trees, a stand or a hitch mount, but it sleeps one person each. The right pick depends on group size, budget and whether you camp where there are trees.

Ground tent with a mattress or cot

A roomy tent with a thick mattress is the classic setup and the easiest way to sleep a family together. Comfort depends on the mattress and the site: pick level ground, top off air mattresses at bedtime (they soften as the night cools), and put insulation under you on cool nights. A cot gets you off the ground but needs a tall tent and a pad on top when it's cold.

Rooftop tent

A rooftop tent folds out on your vehicle with a mattress inside, so you get a flat bed off the ground in a few minutes, wherever you can park. The downsides are cost, the weight on your roof, the climb up a ladder, and having to fold it away before you drive to the trailhead or the store.

Sleeping in your vehicle

If your SUV, van or truck is long enough, a platform and mattress in the back is the cheapest off-the-ground option and needs no setup. Crack the windows to manage condensation, and bring window covers for privacy and early light.

Lay-flat hammock tent

Side or stomach sleepers, or anyone who wakes up sore on the ground: a lay-flat hammock tent on trees, a stand or a hitch mount.
