How to Choose a Camping Shelter as a Beginner
Haven Tents · October 21, 2026 · 3 min read
How do you choose a camping shelter as a beginner? Start with four questions: how many people will sleep in it, how you'll get to camp (car or on foot), what the weather and terrain will be, and how you sleep. For most beginners car camping with family or friends, a simple dome tent with good sleeping pads is the cheapest, easiest shared option. If you sleep alone and badly on the ground, a lay-flat hammock tent gives you a flat bed off the ground with the shelter built in. Backpackers should look at weight and packed size first. Whatever you pick, set it up at home before your first trip.

Four questions to ask first
- Who's sleeping in it? One person, a couple or a family changes everything. Shared tents are listed by capacity, and a "2-person" tent is snug for two adults.
- How do you get to camp? If you park next to your site, weight barely matters. If you hike in, every pound and every inch of pack space counts.
- Where and when? Wooded sites, open campgrounds with tent pads, the desert and the mountains suit different shelters. Most beginners camp in late spring to early fall, so a three-season shelter covers it.
- How do you sleep? Back sleepers do fine on most pads. Side and stomach sleepers, and anyone who wakes up sore, should think hardest about what they lie on.
The main shelter types
| Shelter | Best for | Pros | Cons |
| Dome tent | Most beginners, couples, small families | Affordable, easy to pitch, freestanding, works on most flat ground | You sleep on the ground; comfort depends on your pad |
| Cabin tent | Families car camping | Tall walls, room to stand, space for cots | Big, heavy, catches wind |
| Backpacking tent | Hikers | Light and compact | Cramped; usually more expensive for the size |
| Hammock + tarp + bug net | Light hikers among trees | Light, off the ground | Separate pieces to rig; curved lie; needs insulation underneath |
| Lay-flat hammock tent | Solo campers who sleep badly on the ground, side and stomach sleepers | Flat bed off the ground, insulated pad, bug net and rainfly in one kit | One person each; needs trees, a stand or a hitch mount (or bivy mode on the ground) |
| Cot or tent cot | Car campers who want off the ground | Flat, off the ground, works on any level surface | Bulky; cold underneath without a pad |
| Rooftop tent | Couples who camp from a vehicle | Flat mattress, quick to open | Expensive, needs a rack, pack it up to drive |
Don't forget the sleep system
The shelter is only one part of a good night. You also need something supportive to lie on, insulation underneath you (the ground pulls heat away faster than air), and a sleeping bag or quilt rated for the night's low. Beginners often buy a good tent and a thin pad, then sleep badly. Read What Is an Outdoor Sleep System? for how the parts fit together, and Hammock vs Cot vs Sleeping Pad to compare beds.
Where a lay-flat hammock tent fits
A Haven combines the shelter, a flat bed and an insulated pad, so a beginner has less to buy and match. It suits solo campers who camp among trees, and car campers who can bring the Haven Stand. It's less suited to a family that wants to share one tent, to campgrounds that don't allow hammocks (see Using a Hammock Tent at Campgrounds), or to very tight budgets. Some families mix: a dome tent for the kids and a Haven each for the adults. To see if it's right for you, read Are Lay-Flat Hammocks Worth It? and our Haven vs Ground Tents comparison.

Beginner tips for any shelter
- Practice at home. Pitch it in the yard or living room, and sleep in it for a night if you can.
- Check the forecast and the site rules before you pack.
- Choose your spot carefully: no dead branches overhead, not in a low spot where water collects, and out of the wind if you can.
- Use the rainfly and guylines even if the sky looks clear.
- Bring a repair kit: tape, a patch kit for your pad and spare cord.
- Borrow or rent first if you're not sure which style suits you.
